HOW JASTECA COMMENCED THE 5S COMPETITION
The 5S concept was introduced to Sri Lanka around 1994 by Dr.Taiki Akimoto who was brought to Sri Lanka for a private company assignment at the Midaya Ceremics factory, Meepe, owned by Senior Vice Patron of JASTECA, Mr. Dayasiri Warnakulasooriya who loaned Dr. Taiki Akimoto to JASTECA to conduct the first ever Public Seminar on the 5S concept. With the death of Dr. Taiki Akimoto, JASTECA thought of implementing the 5S concept for the development of the industry and institutions in general and thus commenced the "Taiki Akimoto 5S Awards Competition". Since the year 1996 JASTECA has continuously conducted the competition as an annual event to date, which has become virtually a national event now.
In the past few years large number of applications are received (OVER 100) for the “Taiki Akimoto” 5S Completion including Public & Private Sector Institutions. Some of the institution categories were Manufacturing, Service, Trade, Banks, Apparel, Telecommunication and Hydro-Power Projects.
THE PROCESS
As the applications are called from the potential Institutions to participate at the 5S Competition, an awareness programme on the Implementation of the 5S Concept is conducted as a Public Seminar. Subsequently, an Orientation Program will be conducted for all those Institutions who apply for the 5S Competition with a view to explaining the curriculum applicable to, in conducting the “Taiki Akimoto” 5S Competition as explained in the “5S Concept Manual” publication by JASTECA.
Preliminary Round Audits will be then conducted at every competitors’ Institution by a 3-member panel of auditors and the Final Round Audits will be conducted with the active participation of a Japanese Expert and the Grand Awards ceremony of the “Taiki Akimoto” 5S Awards will be held at a Hotel in Colombo.

The experience JASTECA gained over the years on the subject of Japanese Management 5S concept is enormous. This prompted JASTECA to accept the challenge of implementing the 5S concept in five government hospitals namely, Dankotuwa, Madampe, Chillaw, Kuliyapitiya and Kurunegala as a pilot project to ascertain the possibility of changing the management and administration norms in such institutions for obvious benefits on key performance indicator (KPI), before any financial assistance from the Japanese government comes forth to some Asian and East African countries in the future. This project was carried out by Mr Mahinda Saranapala & Mr Premalal Fernando, within a very limited and restricted period of 10 months as such a few areas of each government hospitals mentioned above were developed to a "benchmark" level. This pilot project probably has now exposed the capability and advantages the government hospitals could achieve, hence several government hospitals all over the country have now commenced implementing the 5S concept.
